Grieving After a Stroke

“Stroke changed me forever  — in an instant.”

My stroke changed my life in so many ways I could not even imagine if someone had told me prior to that day on October 3, 2017. However, I have learned to cope with and accept my new life. I have learned to embrace my new life. I am no longer the same person I was before. I still have issues were people don’t understand me but  I am who and what I am now.

I have been through the cycle of grieve since my stroke; anger, sadness, heartbrokenness, pity, and denial until I was able to accept my stroke and embrace the healing process. I had to ultimately learn to love me!

I wrote this poem in 2010 I did not realize it then how much this still resonates now.

GODIS Within

The joy that you have given me has made my life worth living even more

I had convinced myself that I would spend the remainder of my life on my own
Preoccupying myself in community, school, work, and home

The night I went deep within
I cried out to The Multiverse
Praying for relief from the exertions of this life
Reflecting on the pains that I had thought was too much for me to bare, I went to sleep and woke up and peace was there

The first message of my new day
The Sun shined on me and brought forth a new peace
My life will brighten the cloudy skies for someone to see
The sound of my voice, and the prophetic words I speak take me on a natural high

If I had not pain, I wouldn’t know healing, If I had not sorrow I wouldn’t know joy,
If I had not been brokenhearted, I wouldn’t know true LOVE
And If I had not known LOVE, I would not have known ME
